The short version
Two ways to do this properly. A standby unit on an automatic transfer switch runs itself: power drops, it starts, the house comes back in under a minute. A portable is cheaper and manual: an inlet box outside and an interlock or transfer switch at the panel so you can never backfeed the utility line. What is never acceptable is a suicide cord.
